Research Degrees

Master of Philosophy (MPhil)

Length of candidature: 1-2 years full-time, 2-4 years part-time
Admission requirements: A Bachelor degree with first-class or second-class Honours or other evidence of significant research ability. In some disciplines further research training or the completion of a preliminary coursework program in research preparation may be required prior to admission. Guidelines for other evidence of research ability are specified below.

Facilities are available in all Departments for the completion by research of the degree of Master of Philosophy (MPhil), Candidates pursue an approved program of advanced study and research which may include some coursework and research seminar units and participation in presentations.

The minimum period of candidature for full-time candidates is one year, the maximum period two years. For part-time candidates the minimum is two years, the maximum four years. Full-time candidates are expected to commit a minimum of 40 hours per week on their research study program. Part-time candidates must be able to spend on average throughout the year at least 20 hours a week on a program of research and study and attend the University on average at least once a week for consultation with their supervisors.

The thesis must form a contribution to the knowledge in the area with which it deals by presenting new interpretations of facts or by demonstrating an independent critical ability to evaluate existing material in a new light. Examination is by thesis.

To be eligible for consideration for admission to the MPhil an applicant must normally possess a Bachelor degree with first or second-class Honours from a recognised tertiary institution. Equivalent qualifications or other evidence of research ability is defined as follows:

Bachelor's degree with demonstrated research experience (co-authorship on a paper or other quantifiable experience able to be assessed by the Committee).

Bachelor's degree with a satisfactorily completed Macquarie University postgraduate certificate in research preparation.

Bachelor's degree with a satisfactorily completed honours degree which includes a research project normally worth at least 25% of the honours program load.

Bachelor's degree with a satisfactorily completed coursework Master including a research project normally worth at least 25% of the Master program load.

Bachelor's degree with a satisfactorily completed postgraduate diploma including a research component worth 25% of the program load and directly related to the acquisition of research skills.
