Profile

My background is in Geochemistry with a PhD from the research school at ANU. I became interested in isotope geochemistry in the latter part of my PhD using the rubidium-strontium dating method and then undertook post-doctoral research in Finland, Sweden, Switzerland and later in the USA, where I learnt the uranium-lead geochronology method. I joined CSIRO Division of Mineralogy in 1973 and with a team developed the lead isotope method for use in mineral exploration. In 1990 I was approached to undertake lead isotope analyses to investigate the mobilization of lead from the maternal skeleton, funded from the US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. When the PI left for the UK, I took over that role and assembled a team of multidisciplinary researchers. That was the beginning of my interest in environmental health which has continued to this day. Being able to help people exposed to toxins is especially gratifying. I joined GSE in 1995 and have continued an association with CSIRO.

Research Interest

Environmental science especially environmental health including; biokinetics of lead in human pregnancy and osteoporosis, toxic metals in mining and urban environments (impact on environment and humans, sources and pathways, remedial actions), radiogenic isotope methods in environmental monitoring, lead paint management, dietary intake of metals, pharmacokinetic modelling, forensic science, metal emissions from petrol especially manganese and lead, and metallic nanoparticles and health.
