Profile
I joined the Graduate School of the Environment in mid 2005 after returning to Australia after 14 years working for IUCN – the World Conservation Union, an international organisation in Gland, Switzerland.
I started working as IUCN Head of Environmental Education and Communication at a most exciting time. It was just before the Third World Congress on Protected Areas in Caracas, Venezuela 1992; IUCN, WWF and UNEP had launched their Strategy for Sustainable Living – "Caring for the Earth" and in 1992 there was the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio that shaped the idea of education for sustainable development. I have been working on that ever since...
I worked with a great voluntary global network of people, the IUCN Commission on Education and Communication CEC, who were exploring how to be more effective as change agents for sustainability and for biodiversity conservation. We are a knowledge network and share learning with governments, NGOs, education professionals and in environmental Convention processes.
I am now a member of the Commission and in 2007 I was part of a team developing a Convention toolkit for governments on how to use communication and education to engage with the public and mainstream biodiversity. http://www.cbd.int/cepa/toolkit/index.html
My work meant I met many interesting and reflective people from university environment departments from all over the world as a part of the CEC World Conservation Learning Network WCLN www.wcln.org. So here I am a part of that teaching fraternity, enjoying relating theory to practice, working with students with rich experiences and a collaborative GSE staff!
