Whale Watching Shore Based Whale Spotter 2008

Assist with fieldwork for a project assessing the efficacy of the current whale watching guidelines in Sydney, Australia.

Whale Spotters may be asked to assist with the following project components:

  • Undertake the first empirically assessment of the utility and scientific basis for the Australian National Guidelines for Whale and Dolphin Watching and develop future management recommendations
  • Work with the whale watching industry to quantify the northern and southern humpback migratory corridor off Sydney, relate cetacean locations to oceanographic features and develop a system to allow industry to recognise and report any future changes in migratory patterns
  • Undertake an analysis of the Sydney whale watching industry, assess the factors needed to ensure its sustainability and identify those mechanisms that could encourage sustainable whale watching tourism growth
  • Develop and implement a system that allows the collection and analysis of visual identification images of humpback whales in a consistent manner.

Assist with fieldwork for a project assessing the efficacy of the current whale watching guidelines in Sydney, Australia.

Research Assistants may be asked to assist with the following project components:

  • Undertake the first empirically assessment of the utility and scientific basis for the Australian National Guidelines for Whale and Dolphin Watching and develop future management recommendations
  • Work with the whale watching industry to quantify the northern and southern humpback migratory corridor off Sydney, relate cetacean locations to oceanographic features and develop a system to allow industry to recognise and report any future changes in migratory patterns
  • Undertake an economic analysis of the Sydney whale watching industry, assess the factors needed to ensure its sustainability and identify those mechanisms that could encourage sustainable whale watching tourism growth in rural and regional areas
  • Develop and implement a system that allows the collection and analysis of visual identification images of humpback whales in a consistent manner.
